What impact would it have when everything suddenly faded to black?

For Mia, a crowded subway ride changes her entire life. Retreating to the wilderness helps her cope with a world that is suddenly too loud, too turbulent.

Her existence safely contained to the small cottage on the lake, she is unprepared for the neighbor that moves across the bay

A career-ending injury has Jared permanently benched. His reputation as The Enforcer won’t survive the unanticipated responsibilities awaiting him.

Away from the public eye, he adjust to his new reality, under the quiet observation of the intriguing hermit on the other side of the water.

Freya Barker is quickly becoming one of my authors to go to when I need to be swept away in a hot older romance. A Change in Time certainly did not disappoint and is the first in a new series, Northern Lights.

Hiding away in her log cabin for the past decade, Mia has slowly come to build a sense of peace with a few episodes of anxiety but she has come to accept her new way of life. After living through an horrific incident years ago, it has left a lasting effect on how Mia sees the world. She therefore feels threatened of her peaceful life when her new neighbour moves in. After weeks of noisy construction and then catching him doing al fresco sex with a woman on his boat, she knows her life as it is will never be the same. How little did she know that it actually would but for entirely different reasons than her presumptions.

Jared is recently retired from his career with the NHL. Seeking out a new life away from the limelight he buys a property on the lake. He rarely sees his new neighbour but that for him is perfectly fine. However after a ‘last hurrah’ with the sexy blonde he picked up in town, he knows the woman across the lake was watching. This sets off his intrigue on who she is.

I love that this romance is between an older couple (Jared is 39 and Mia is 42) and that initially they looked like they were complete opposites. However, little by little they start to find themselves in close and closer proximity and this in turn starts off a rollercoaster of emotional overflow both mentally and definitely sexually.

The gradual build-up of the storyline with little angst and hardly any frustration lead to a spectacularly engaging read throughout. I was a little hesitant at first thinking this was another hockey sports romance but there is little mention of the sport talk (which I find hard to fathom!) but it illustrated the type of man that Jared had been up to now – a bit of a player and much of a womaniser. So the balance of him now turning his back on all that and supporting Mia through her own change of life routine was a joy to read. Both were instantly likeable and the chemistry between them was tangible and hot. I also loved the few secondary characters involved in the sub story such as Jared’s sister, Jordy, her baby, Ole and Mia’s BFF. There were a couple of characters with the initial J that got a bit confusing so I would have preferred some different name choices. Guess that is my only complaint on this book though as otherwise I was hooked from beginning to end.

This is a one click recommend to other readers from me and a four and a half stars rating. Loved it!
